Service to others opportunity

Americorps is a national service initiative through which individuals provide intensive service addressing local needs in communities throughout our state and country.  There are several projects in Nebraska with more than 250 AmeriCorps members serving to provide basic needs by offering enriching out-of-school experiences to children and youth.

Enrollment in AmeriCorps is competitive but the basic expectations are minimal:  individuals musht be at least 17; be a US Citizen or permanent lawful resident; have a high school diploma, GED or agree to work to earn one; and be able to pass a criminal history background check.  In return for their service, AmeriCorps members receive outstanding training, gain new skills and experiences, receive a modest living allowance, earn an educational award that they can use to pay for higher education or repay student loans and get the satisfaction that comes from helping others.

U.S. Service Academy/Military Day

U.S. Senator Mike Johanns and Congressman Jeff Fortenberry will be hosting a U.S. Service Academy/Military Day this year in Lincoln, Nebraska.  The day is for high school students and their parents to learn about the service academy nomination process and other opportunities for military service such as ROTC, the National Guard, Reserves and enlisting.

The event will be held Saturday, March 31st from 9:00 – 12:00 at Lincoln Southwest High School located at 7001 South 14th Street in Lincoln.  A program will be held from 10:30 – 12:00 with military representatives available before the program to answer questions.

Course Offerings for Next Year

Sophomores & Juniors:  It will soon be time to request classes for next year.  Below is a listing of college classes that CCC will be offering.  If you are interested in taking something, let me know so we can try to get it set in our schedule. You need acceptable scores on the COMPASS test or a 19 on the ACT to take classes from CCC.

You can also look at the Advanced Scholars program through the University of NE-Lincoln.  Here is the website:  http://advancedscholars.unl.edu/  Please notice their admission criteria.

A third place to check out classes for both high school or college credit is:  http://nvis.esucc.org/  click on course offerings on the left hand side, then in the main area click under time offered and select upcoming.  This will give you a list of all classes being offered in the future.  There is a huge range of classes available there.  Again, let me know if you see something of interest so we can work on trying to make that available to you.

Financial Aid Time

We received a letter at our house this week from Student Financial Aid Services inviting us to call to get assistance with filing the FAFSA.  Tiny print at the bottom indicates this is a fee-based service and is not affiliated with the U.S. Department of Education.

I just wanted to remind everyone that the FAFSA can be filed for free.  We are lucky in Nebraska to have access to EducationQuest, a non profit organization, that can assist you with the FAFSA.  EducationQuest is sending a representative to DCHS on Feb 27 from 12:00 – 8:00 for individual appointments to assist parents in filing the FAFSA.  To get an appointment call EducationQuest’s Lincoln office at 800-303-3745.

Remember, you should never have to pay to access financial aid information.
